Woman Gives Birth in Hotel, Managers Are Not Pleased

There are tons of stories about women giving birth in public places--parking lots, sidewalks, train stations--and it's safe to assume mom would rather be someplace more private and sanitary. But one couple chose a corner suite at The Nines, a gorgeous luxury hotel in Portland, Oregon, for their "home birth". The hotel says had they known, they wouldn't have allowed it. How did they find out? The delightful couple posted a video on YouTube called "Our Luxury Hotel Birth" almost two years after their little bundle's birth. Ugh.

Kristen Kingsbury told KOIN that she'd planned a home birth but when she saw the hotel, that all changed. ""We walked in and I am telling you, I was like, 'I am having this baby here.' It was gorgeous." That sounds a lot like something you'd say about a wedding, not a baby. But that's what just what Kristen and husband Pippen wanted on the day of their baby's arrival, so they ponied up the $299 for the suite of their dreams. And because they were in the process of moving as her due date was nearing, it was just too much to unpack their own belongings and have the doula come with the inflatable tub. And it was just so pretty! In the YouTube video, you can hear the proud daddy saying "This is the nicest hotel room I've ever been in."

The Kingsburys aren't alone in this arrogant, presumptuous birthing choices. Plenty of midwives have delivered babies in hotel rooms, using dog wee-wee pads to catch the mess and setting up the inflatable pool in the middle of the room. As one commenter said on Mommyish, hotels are for conception only. Giving birth there is just unsanitary and rude, not to mention a huge liability for the hotel.

Do you know mothers who've given birth in hotel rooms on purpose?
