Baby Born in the Philippines During Catastrophic Typhoon

The storm that crushed the Philippines has made headlines worldwide. Typhoon Haiyan's devastation is hard to watch on the news, but one tiny baby is giving her country hope. When Bea Joy was born this morning, medics and rescue personnel clapped, reports the Associated Press. She was named after her grandmother, who's gone missing in the storm.

In the city of Tacloban, officials estimate at least 10,000 people have died since the storm made landfall on Friday. But little Bea Joy's birth is a miracle in a country where it's hard to have hope:

"Her birth was near miraculous — her mother was in an evacuation center when the storm surge hit and flooded the city. The mother had to swim and cling to a post to survive before she found safety at the airport. Her husband in Manila was unaware of what has happened."

We wish the very best for Bea and her mother, Emily Ortega.
