Firefighters in the eastern Chinese city Jinhua performed a dramatic rescue of a newborn who was trapped in a sewer pipe. Now, the mother of the baby boy has come forward, reports CNN.
The mother, whose name is being withheld, said she felt stomach pains and rushed to the bathroom, where she went into labor. But without help, she found herself in trouble.
“She tried to grab something to help herself because there is too much blood,” the police officer said in a video interview Tuesday. “She couldn’t hold the baby anymore, and he slides into the sewage through the hole of the toilet.”…
She said that after she was unable to retrieve the baby with a stick, she decided to flush the toilet to clear away the blood, according to the officer, whose name and title wasn’t provided in the interview
She then contacted the landlord, saying she heard a baby crying through the wall, as though he were trapped in the pipes. The landlord came to check and found her bloody pants.
It’s unclear whether the mother will be charged with any crime, though it was reported before she came forward that police would be treating the incident as an attempted homicide. The infant is in a local hospital in stable condition.
